Kelsey Scott, director of finance at Brief Media—publisher of leading veterinary publication and reference brands Clinician’s Brief and Plumb’s Veterinary Drugs—has been recognized as the 2019 Emerging Leader in the annual Women Who Count awards.
The 2019 Women Who Count awards are announced at the annual Women Who Count national conference held by the Accounting & Financial Women’s Alliance (AFWA), which promotes the professional growth of women in accounting and finance. The awards recognize female leaders in the profession who lead by example in their companies and communities and have “earned the trust and respect of their clients and peers,” according to the AFWA.
Scott accepted the Emerging Leader award at a ceremony on October 22, 2019, in Orlando, Florida.
“It is a privilege to be awarded this honor. I hope I am an example to women in our industry,” says Scott. “I strive to provide the consistent message that with hard work, perseverance, and a drive for success, women can achieve a successful career in a male-dominated corporate landscape and have the family they’ve always dreamed of.”
Scott’s journey with Brief Media began in February 2016 when she joined as an accounting assistant. She was quickly elevated to accountant, followed by accounting manager, and now director of finance as part of the Brief Media executive team. Scott has demonstrated a consistent pattern of leadership and a fierce passion for finance done right. She has been a crucial leader in the growth and development of the finance team at Brief Media—from recruiting and hiring to onboarding and training. In addition, Scott played an integral role in the acquisition of a core brand for Brief Media.
“Kelsey has become a central voice in strategic planning, in which her integrity serves as a beacon to our organization’s leadership,” says Michelle Munkres, Brief Media’s senior director of content. “It has become exceedingly clear to me, as the head of the content department, that our organization will thrive with Kelsey at the helm of our finance department, chiefly because of her objectivity and integrity in planning and deliverables.”
Scott continues to push the limits and set remarkable goals as she works to obtain her MBA in finance while simultaneously balancing her responsibilities as a director and a mother. Her passion for both career and family has required her to learn how to strike a healthy balance between the two.
“Kelsey was appointed to the executive team at the age of 23 as a result of her financial acumen and her willingness to collaborate with other department leaders to achieve financial success,” says Natalie Williams, chief operating officer of Brief Media. “She continuously improves herself through additional courses, training, and experience and shares her knowledge to help others within our company.”
